Hi everyone! I'm Sheena, a mother of two and a certified infant and child sleep consultant trained under Baby Sleep Consultant New Zealand. Since I was certified in 2020, I've had the privilege of journeying with close to a hundred families to provide much-needed rest to battle-weary nests. Besides providing consultancy services, I run workshops for to-be parents and practitioners in the childcare industry. I have also written articles for theAsianParent.com and provided expert content for their baby sleep tracker.
My journey as a sleep consultant began at the cusp of an unprecedented global pandemic. Working from home allowed me to be far more involved in my son's daily routine than I could have ever imagined. As I took care of him daily, I realised that he was perpetually cranky and overtired despite my best efforts at responding to his needs. It then occurred to me that my son’s reliance on having someone assist him to sleep might be the cause of his unsettled behaviour as he was constantly waking up after short naps, expecting to be resettled to sleep in the same way each time. Encouraged by the example of many others around me, I plucked up the courage to teach my son to sleep independently. As the saying goes, the rest is history.
My son's temperament changed drastically after he started settling himself to sleep. He was so much more cheerful, alert and well-rested, and so were we. I could be more emotionally present for him as a result of getting better sleep. Amazed by how much change we experienced within a short period of time, I decided to train to be a sleep consultant to help other families rediscover the joy of parenting.
As a sleep consultant, I believe in the importance of coaching babies and toddlers to sleep independently at a time that is age-appropriate, and in a manner that is best suited to the disposition of the child. My training has exposed me to a variety of methods ranging from gentler methods to more conventional ones, equipping me with an arsenal of strategies to help parents achieve a broad range of objectives. I am also a proponent of fostering secure attachment relationships between parent and child. As such, I believe in the importance of parents responding consistently and sensitively to the needs of their child during the sleep coaching process.
